plySingle Ply

Acorn are approved contractors in the use of a number of different types of single ply membranes.

Single ply membranes can be used on many different types of applications, such as flat or pitched roofs, on new or existing roofs, and can also be used as an overlay system.

Nowadays, single ply membranes are proberly used more than any other flat roofing material, this is manly due to its long life expectancy, cost implications, and the fact that no naked flames are used in the application.

There are a number of different types of single ply membranes, such as (TPO) which is an advanced Thermoplastic Polyolefin waterproofing solution that combines the flexibility of rubber with the durability of heat welded seams.

(PVC-p-) Polyvinyl chloride. A flexible form of PVC due to the addition of high molecular weight plasticizers, which can be heat or solvent, welded (depending upon the product).

(EPDM) Ethylene Propylene Diene Terpolymer is a naturally flexible material to which carbon black is added for stability. Jointing is normally carried out with tape bonding using a special primer but adhesives can also be used.

(5000 System) is a 5mm thick reinforced bituminous based felt which has a mineral finish it is either mechanically fixed or full adhered and the laps are hot air welded in the same way as other single ply membranes.

Built up felt

Built up felt roofs has had some bad press over recent years, this has been due to roofs leaking and failing.

Cheap Basic felts are readily available from DIY stores and builders merchants, and have been used by DIY homeowners and roofers, with little, or no experience with felt roofs.
These cheap felts are basically paper, that have been coated with bitumen tar.

At Acorn, we only install approved high performance reinforced bitumen felts, that are correctly installed, in accordance with British standards by our highly skilled felt roofers.
