Tiling 1Tiling 2Acorn specialise in all types and method of roof tiling, it is believed that the first single lap clay roof tiles were formed from baked clay or earth around 2700 BC.

The Romans were the first to make and use fired clay tiles in Britain, in 1212 AD King john issued building by-laws for London that required combustible roof coverings to be replaced with clay tiles.

There are so many different types of tiles, nearly every region of Britain had its own tile, south and east of England use manly peg tiles and pan tiles.

In the midlands, and parts of eastern England, plain nib tiles were used, there were tiles with no holes for nailing in these tiles, so they were fixed by either spot bedding in cement mortar or torching, this would involve bedding the tiles together with cement mortar and pointing the underside from inside the roof.

Nowadays there are so many different types of tiles, the more traditional single lap and pan tiles are readily available in hand made, hand crafted and machine made, and the more modern interlocking tiles are available in lots of different shapes and colours and are manly made from concrete.
